Quality Inn Decides: Fix or Replace?
The Quality Inn, located in Waterbury, CT was built in 1967, and had a 3.1 million Btu, atmospheric gas-fired boiler installed on the roof to service both heat and domestic hot water. In the fall of 1993, that boiler required a major repair to its domestic hot water coil and piping. Instead of fixing the old system, management decided to research other options.
In the midst of their research efforts, the Inn's hot water system failed. Quality Inn called AERCO for an emergency replacement. Within two days, an AERCO KC-1000 Gas Fired Water Heater was installed with only four to five hours downtime.
Within a month, when the old boiler pressure vessel started leaking, Quality Inn called AERCO back for a KC-1000 Gas Fired Boiler, making the old boiler totally obsolete. The hotel was down only 20 hours without heat.
The AERCO units run at 95-99% efficiency while maintaining precise temperature control of +/- 2° regardless of load variation. "For a hotel, this is extremely important because some days we're at capacity and other nights we're not," said Jim Frenis, Hotel General Manager. "Last summer we had a baseball convention fill this place, with four to a room. We never had one complaint about the hot water. To me, with all the showers taking place at basically the same time, that's amazing."
